Four touted areas that Milan will look to strengthen in this summer

AC Milan face a crucial summer this year amid ongoing speculation of key changes at the club, including a possible new appointment as coach.

Despite our consistency in qualifying for the Champions League over the past four years, there has undeniably been a decline both in our performances and results over the past two seasons.

From the highs of winning the Scudetto in 2022 and reaching the Champions League semi-finals last year, to the underwhelming and mediocre runs both in Serie A and in Europe since.

The expectation is that Stefano Pioli will depart at the end of the season, while it remains to be seen how many current players follow him out of the club as we rebuild and give our potential new coach the flexibility and backing to mould the squad into his own.

According to Antonio Vitiello, various names remain under consideration to be named as Pioli’s successor, while both Olivier Giroud and Simon Kjaer are set to move on this summer in what will represent somewhat of a changing of the guard at the club.

Further though and intriguingly, he adds that Milan will make four important signings this summer, with a new striker, a defensive midfielder, a centre-half and a right-back reportedly our priorities heading into the transfer window.

Given Giroud’s touted exit, signing a new striker to lead the line and provide a focal point in attack will be fundamental, while we’ve certainly been lacking and vulnerable defensively in midfield, with no real successful attempt to fill the voids that Franck Kessie and Sandro Tonali ultimately left.

Our injury crisis earlier this season exposed our problems in the heart of our defence, and the expected departure of Kjaer will emphasise the need to bring in another option, while Davide Calabria’s inconsistency and Alessandro Florenzi’s age make adding a right-back to the Milan squad another sensible strategy.

While it will be difficult to address all of our needs in one window, these are critical areas in which we need to improve. However, regardless of who our coach is for next season, any new signing needs to be an ideal fit for what they’re building and capable of improving what we already have to help make us increasingly competitive.
