Milan team news vs Genoa: Double boost, update on key trio

AC Milan face Genoa on Sunday, and Stefano Pioli could be handed a double fitness boost for the Serie A encounter.

With Champions League qualification secured and speculation rife that changes are coming in the summer, it remains to be seen what we get from this Milan side in our final four games of the season.

It’s hoped that they can produce a positive finish to Pioli’s tenure, with the expectation that he will depart at the end of the campaign, as we look to build some positivity and momentum going into next year.

In order to have the best possible chance of doing that, the Milan boss would have hoped for positive news on the injury front, and he’s been handed a boost despite still being without key individuals.

According to MilanNews, Pierre Kalulu returned to group training this week and so the French defender appears on course to return to action, while Luka Jovic split his time on Friday between a personalised session and work with the rest of the group.

It’s hoped that the pair are available this weekend and in this final run-in, as it provides Pioli with important options at either end of the pitch, even if it’s merely depth as they work their match fitness and sharpness back up.

However, Simon Kjaer, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mike Maignan were all limited to personalised work as they continue their respective recoveries from injury, and that key trio will miss this weekend’s meeting with Genoa.

It’s been a difficult season for the Rossoneri as we’ve fallen short of our objectives and it feels as though it’s the end of a cycle as we arguably look like a side in need of fresh energy and ideas.

Nevertheless, it’s also important not to dismiss the good work that Pioli has done since he was appointed both in terms of the progression and success we’ve seen, and so it’s hoped that if this is indeed to be his last month at the helm, we can put together a run of convincing wins to go out on a high.
