Amorim holds further talks with stalwart to keep him at Milan

AC Milan reportedly remain confident that midfield stalwart Luka Modric will sign a new deal and extend his stay at the club.

The 40-year-old joined us last summer and made 37 appearances last season, scoring two goals and providing three assists to go with his overall influence in midfield.

Just as he showed in his first year in Italy, Modric proved at the World Cup that he is still more than capable of performing at the top level, and so with Ruben Amorim arriving this summer and preparing for his first year in charge, it’s no surprise that the Portuguese tactician is said to want the Croatian international to remain with the Rossoneri.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Milan remain confident that Modric will sign a new deal, and it’s added that Amorim has spoken to him again to inform him of his plans for him moving forward.

However, Romano ends by saying that no decision has yet been made and so it remains to be seen which way Modric is leaning, but hopefully he is eager to stay with us for one more year at least and help us begin this new cycle.

With his experience, quality, leadership and intelligence on the pitch, Modric is exactly the type of player Amorim needs as one of his trusted generals in the team, not only to set the standard for the entire squad, but also to help the younger players come through as well.

While Milan will no doubt move to bring in a replacement if the Croatian midfielder opts to move on, it’s a transfer headache that we would arguably prefer to avoid and focus our attention elsewhere as the Milan boss looks to continue to stamp his mark on the squad and bring in reinforcements who are better suited to his preferred system and style of play.

Goncalo Ramos and Mario Gila are certainly not the last of our notable signings this summer, but time will tell if Modric will be one of those who departs.
