Calabria deservedly rewarded with new deal as he matures into key Milan figure

AC Milan confirmed Davide Calabria has signed a contract extension this week, and it’s a boost for the Rossoneri to see his progression.

As per the club’s site, the 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal that will run until 2025, thus securing his long-term future.

Having seen Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu leave on free transfers this summer, it’s arguably an acknowledgement from the club just how highly they rate Calabria that they didn’t want to risk a repeat situation next summer.

That said, it’s also a deal that he has earned with his performances on the pitch, especially last season, and it’s hoped that he now kicks on and improves further.

Calabria eradicating inconsistency, solid Milan piece

Having come through the club’s youth ranks, there is naturally a soft spot for Calabria, particularly given many of his former teammates at youth level have left the Rossoneri.

He remains the one big hope to enjoy a successful and lengthy career at Milan, and with this new deal, he has the foundation and platform to kick on and make that happen.

From the inconsistency and mistakes of previous seasons, Calabria took a big step forward last year with his form as he proved to be a reliable and solid presence at right-back.

Gone were the question marks and rotation with Andrea Conti, Calabria made that position his own and it remains his going into the new season.

There were certainly telling improvements in his game too. From his maturity, decision-making, defensive ability and using his expanding experience, there was just a bigger sense of trust with him in that role last year.

His energy and desire to get forward will always be there to help provide width for us and an option down the right flank, but it was always the defensive part of the game that he needed to develop and become stronger in.

That is starting to happen and it’s hoped that he can now build on last season and take it to another level rather than stagnate or take a step back. With his new deal, he has the trust and commitment from the club, now he must reward that faith with his displays on the pitch.
