Milan consider free transfer swoop to strengthen midfield options

AC Milan are reportedly looking to secure the signing of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans, who is available on a free transfer this summer.

The 26-year-old experienced a difficult season last year as he was unable to help Leicester City avoid relegation from the Premier League, as he made 37 appearances across all competitions while contributing four goals and two assists.

For a player of his ability, there was certainly a big drop-off last season considering his influence on the side prior to that when in form, and so question marks could arguably be raised over whether or not it would still be a good move from a Milan perspective.

According to Antonio Vitiello though, the Rossoneri are trying to land Tielemans on a free transfer this summer, and so time will tell what the outcome of those discussions is in terms of whether or not we move to the front of the queue to land his signature in the coming weeks.

Such a move would perhaps be smart business given the Belgian international is available on a free transfer, and at the very least, he could become a key option to add competition and depth as we look to compete across multiple fronts again next season.

That said, if we want to regain our Serie A crown and compete with Europe’s elite moving forward, an argument could be made that there are surely better options available on the market, and so time will tell if Milan make progress with his touted signing or if we end up looking elsewhere.

Additionally, the problem at this stage is that there is still a lot of uncertainty and concern about the direction in which ownership and the new-look management infrastructure will take us, as while we surely now need to start spending money on high-level targets, it could be another frustrating and disappointing summer if we’re looking at low-cost signings with question marks over them instead.
