Player swap touted as Milan in talks with Serie A rivals over exchange

AC Milan are reportedly in talks with Roma over a potential player swap involving Marco Sportiello and Pierluigi Gollini.

The Rossoneri look set to be very active in the transfer market this summer as Massimiliano Allegri moulds the squad into his own with significant turnover in personnel.

While it’s been relatively quiet thus far in terms of official deals, speculation has been rife over potential incomings and outgoings, and a new move has been touted involving a reshuffle in the goalkeeper department.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan are in talks with Roma over potentially swapping goalkeepers Sportiello and Gollini, thus giving each club a new back-up option between the posts.

Gollini, 30, has had quite the career thus far with spells at Aston Villa, Atalanta, Napoli and now Roma to name but a few, and so he certainly has the experience and ability to offer us a reliable second-choice option behind Mike Maignan.

Sportiello is three years older at 33 and has made 12 appearances for Milan since joining us from Atalanta in 2023, and so it’s unclear why this is a necessary shift for the club rather than just sticking with what we’ve got.

Ultimately, the hope will be that Maignan has an injury-free campaign and eventually puts pen to paper on a contract extension, given his current deal is set to expire in 12 months time.

That said, having been heavily linked with an exit this summer, it looks as though the Frenchman will now be staying for the upcoming season, and so perhaps if there is still no intention to commit beyond this year, Milan are assessing their options over who could be a long-term replacement for him.

Gollini may well be that option if this touted swap deal goes through, while youngster Lorenzo Torriani will hope to be involved in that conversation too as he continues to improve and develop as an understudy.
