Two out, one in as Milan plot touted reshuffle in key area

AC Milan are reportedly planning to make important changes to our defence this summer, with incomings and outgoings being touted.

The Rossoneri have endured a miserable campaign this year as we look set to miss out on Champions League qualification, but there is still hope that we’ll be able to add another trophy to the cabinet through the Coppa Italia.

That in turn will come with European qualification, but time will tell if Sergio Conceicao and the players can salvage something from the season in the form of more silverware as we continue to disappoint and frustrate with a lack of consistency in Serie A.

Speculation has been rife that we are planning to appoint a new sporting director, but that hasn’t stopped transfer rumours from building, with Calciomercato reporting that both Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw are expected to leave this summer, with interest building in the defensive pair.

Meanwhile, it’s added that Milan, led by Geoffrey Moncada until a sporting director arrives, have interest in Valencia centre-half Cristhian Mosquera, and so we may well step up our pursuit sooner rather than later to avoid facing stiffer competition for the Spain U23s international when the current campaign concludes.

Milan currently sit ninth in the league table after 33 games, having conceded 38 goals in those outings, which gives us the second-worst defensive record of the top 10 sides in the standings.

In turn, it’s clearly an area in which we must improve for next season with Mosquera, 20, establishing himself as a key figure for Valencia, featuring 36 times so far this season.

Should a deal materialise, it would be an exciting addition on paper given what he’s shown thus far and with so much of his career still ahead of him, but should both Tomori and Thiaw leave to make room for new signings, that would be a pivotal change and a loss of experience and quality in itself.

That said, Milan face a critical summer as we try to fix and rebuild a squad that has underwhelmed and disappointed while regressing over the past 12 months, and it’s absolutely imperative that a sporting director, and if a coaching change is made, then a new coach too is in place before we start making changes to the group.

For now, the focus is finishing the season as well as possible on the pitch, but work must be done to have the pieces in place for us to attack the summer transfer window immediately and with synergy between the different levels at the club with any new personnel in place and settled,
