Milan paired with interest in prolific target to bolster attack

AC Milan are reportedly considering a transfer swoop for Atalanta forward Mateo Retegui to bolster our attack next season.

The 26-year-old is coming off the back of a highly impressive campaign in which he scored 28 goals and provided nine assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. 25 of those goals and eight assists came in 36 Serie A outings.

With six goals in 18 caps for Italy too, he has emerged as a top marksman in Serie A over the past 12 months, and it appears as though his form has attracted interest from the Rossoneri.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan could make a move for the Italian international as we’re in the market for a new striker, but it’s added that signing Retegui is likely to be an expensive move.

In turn, it remains to be seen if the club are willing to spend big if necessary, but with the report noting that both Tammy Abraham and Luka Jovic could depart this summer, the former returning to Roma after his loan stint, then that certainly leaves us short of firepower in the attacking third.

Time will tell if Santiago Gimenez does enough to convince Massimiliano Allegri that he’s the right man to lead the line for us on a consistent basis next season, but our touted interest in Retegui arguably casts doubt on that scenario too.

Given that there’s no mention in the article about talks or a possible agreement being close, there is seemingly still a long way to go before the Atalanta ace becomes a possible reinforcement this summer, but Milan would appear to be keen on strengthening our frontline with a player that will suit Allegri’s preferred system and style of play.

Further, with no European football next season, there will be less games to play across all fronts, and so that in turn perhaps factors into our plans this summer to trim the squad and begin to fill it with more quality over quantity, as speculation continues to suggest that there will be significant exits this month.

Retegui showed last season how prolific he is capable of being, certainly domestically, and so it remains to be seen if he brings that clinical play to San Siro from next season onwards.
