Milan set to complete free transfer signing to address key issue

AC Milan are reportedly set to complete the signing of Marco Sportiello on a free transfer on Tuesday to bolster our goalkeeping depth.

With Ciprian Tatarusanu and Antonio Mirante out of contract this summer, the Rossoneri are expected to reshuffle our goalkeeper options to add competition and depth behind Mike Maignan.

It’s an area in which we’ve needed to improve and raise the level, and it appears as though we’re set to make a key signing in that department, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Sportiello will undergo his medical and sign his Milan contract on Tuesday to join us on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old initially joined Atalanta in 2012, and despite a string of loan stints elsewhere, he made 137 appearances for the club and so will hopefully bring experience and reliability in between the posts when needed.

While Maignan will undoubtedly remain our first-choice option, the French shot-stopper struggled with an injury last season, forcing him to miss a significant chunk of the campaign.

In turn, it was important that we acted this summer to have better depth available to Stefano Pioli, and Sportiello will hopefully provide that, while youngster Devis Vasquez may well continue to learn and provide additional cover rather than go out on loan.

Given the ongoing question marks being raised over ownership due to their decisions since last season ended with Paolo Maldini departing and Sandro Tonali seemingly soon to follow, all eyes are on Milan’s recruitment this summer to determine whether or not we’ll be more competitive moving forward and are continuing to move in the right direction.

Sportiello will hopefully be the first of many new signings in the coming weeks and months, as Pioli hopes to see clear weaknesses and concerns in his current squad addressed to ensure that we improve on last season and compete at the top level for major honours again.
