Top Milan transfer target’s representatives hold talks, medical touted next week

AC Milan met with the representatives of midfielder Luka Modric on Thursday as the club look to secure his signing this summer.

The 39-year-old is set to leave Real Madrid after a trophy-laden stint at the Bernabeu when his contract expires at the end of the month, and it appears as though he’s closing in on his next club.

With Tijjani Reijnders expected to leave the Rossoneri imminently, we have work to do to address our midfield and ensure that Massimiliano Allegri has the quality and depth required to help us bounce back next season.

As per MilanNews’ Antonello Gioia, Modric’s representatives were at Milan’s headquarters on Thursday to finalise details of his contract, and it’s expected to be a one-year deal with an option to extend for a further 12 months, while he’ll earn just under €3.5m per year.

He adds that the Croatian international will travel to Milan next week to undergo his medical, while Fabrizio Romano notes the initial part of his medical will be done in Croatia, but also reported that it will take place next week.

Despite his age, Modric showed last season that he is still capable of playing a key role at the top level, and coupled with his leadership, experience of winning cultures and the technical quality that he can still provide on the pitch, he could be an incredibly important figure for Allegri in his rebuild.

Naturally, we may well have to manage his minutes and consider that aspect given he’s in the latter stages of what is a glittering career, but as Milan look to put a woeful season behind us and start to build the foundations of a successful team moving forward, Modric can certainly still play a vital role in that process both in terms of his footballing ability and character.

It will be interesting to see if his potential signing is supplemented by a further addition in midfield to give us balance and a long-term solution too, but alongside the likes of Youssouf Fofana and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, we’ll hopefully have the necessary balance in that area of the pitch to dictate and dominate games on a consistent basis next season, with the Croatian icon’s craft, intelligence and class on the ball potentially making a telling difference.
