Exit expected as Milan opt against exercising contract option

AC Milan have reportedly opted against extending Luka Jovic’s contract and so he’s set to leave as a free agent this summer.

The 27-year-old joined us in September 2023, and went on to score 13 goals and provide two assists in 47 appearances for the Rossoneri.

While he produced some timely goals and was ultimately an important depth option in attack, most notably in our Coppa Italia semi-final meeting with Inter this past season, it has been felt that Milan must improve in that department and add more quality in the attacking third to give us a more consistent threat.

According to Matteo Moretto, as reported by MilanNews, Milan have opted against exercising the club’s option to extend Jovic’s contract for a further 12 months, and so he is now set to become a free agent.

In turn, that will leave us with a glaring void to fill in our squad, as Massimiliano Allegri will no doubt assess Santiago Gimenez over pre-season, but will either want increased competition or a back-up option at his disposal to offer us more in the final third.

As noted above, if Milan are to compete at a higher level across multiple fronts moving forward, we need to raise the quality level of the squad, and with countless changes touted in other departments, it looks as though we’ll see a reshuffle in attack too.

It will be interesting to see what profile of striker we consider though, as much like our other signings this summer, they’ll all be made with a clear intent of suiting what Allegri wants to implement in terms of system and style of play.

With that in mind, it’s another smart decision to allow Jovic to move on, and hopefully it creates space and financial flexibility to go out and get a more effective option with a longer-term plan.
