Talks underway as Milan consider swoop for defensive reinforcement

AC Milan have reportedly opened talks with Manchester City over the possible signing of defender Kyle Walker.

The Rossoneri signed Emerson Royal last summer to strengthen that area of the squad, but following Paulo Fonseca’s departure and the fact that the Brazilian right-back hasn’t entirely convinced, it looks as though we will re-enter the market to address that position.

Davide Calabria started against Cagliari this weekend with Emerson ruled out due to suspension, and so we do already have competition for that spot in the current squad, with other versatile options able to play there too if Sergio Conceicao wishes to try a different look.

However, despite all that, Fabrizio Romano reports that Milan are now in talks over a potential move for Walker who has expressed a desire to leave Man City for a new challenge abroad, and so initial contact has been made over what terms of a possible agreement might look like.

Walker joined City in 2017, and he has since gone on to make 319 appearances for the club, winning a whole host of trophies during that time, while he also has 93 caps for England to his name.

At 34, it could be argued that his best days are now behind him and so that raises question marks over Milan’s touted pursuit of his signature this month, but he would undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience and quality to the team if he arrived.

Time will tell if he’s a solution that Conceicao specifically wants and feels will be an important fit for what he’s trying to build, while the Milan management will need to be in lockstep with him to ensure it fits our strategy off the pitch in the transfer market from a financial perspective.

Further, with no agreement yet between the clubs or on personal terms, there is still a long way to go before it becomes a serious option it seems, while Antonio Vitiello has since added an interesting wrinkle to the situation, in that we’re seemingly in a position whereby we can only sign one of Walker or Marcus Rashford, having been linked with the latter earlier in the week.

He adds that the Manchester United forward is seen as the priority for now, but time will tell if either Rashford or Walker arrive this month to bolster Conceicao’s group.
