AC Milan have reportedly agreed a deal with Besiktas over the initial loan signing of Emerson Royal, with an option-to-buy clause included in the agreement.
The 26-year-old joined the Rossoneri from Tottenham in August 2024, but after an injury-hit first campaign with us, the Brazilian defender was limited to just 26 appearances last season.
Evidently, he didn’t do enough to convince in those outings to establish himself in Massimiliano Allegri’s plans moving forward, as Fabrizio Romano reports that Emerson is set to join Besiktas on loan, with a €10m option-to-buy clause included in the agreement between the two clubs.
In turn, it remains to be seen if he impresses during his loan stint with the Turkish outfit and has in fact played his last game for us already, but from a Milan perspective, it’s certainly hoped that he does perform well and we can offload him on a permanent basis next summer.
It was ultimately a questionable signing at the time given his struggles to entirely convince at Tottenham, and the Brazilian ace hasn’t been able to change opinion significantly enough to warrant staying on and being a key figure in our rebuild this summer.
With that in mind, an outright move to Besiktas or another interested party next summer would be the ideal outcome, but first, time will tell if he can enjoy a prominent role in the upcoming campaign and showcase his ability to earn a permanent switch.
For Allegri and Milan though, should Emerson’s move go through as expected, it remains to be seen what the club does in the right-back department to add more quality, with Alex Jimenez, Filippo Terracciano and Alexis Saelemaekers potentially vying for the starting role as things stand when the new season gets underway next month.
With Pervis Estupinan closing in on a move to join us from Brighton, as per Antonio Vitiello, the 27-year-old will address a glaring void at left-back after Theo Hernandez’s departure, but Milan will hope to find balance and raise the level of the group by adding another reinforcement on the opposite side in the coming weeks, and Emerson’s exit will clear space and give us additional financial flexibility to perhaps now step up our pursuit of a preferred transfer target.
