Allegri keen to keep Milan man as interest builds in prising him away

AC Milan boss Massimilano Allegri reportedly wants to keep Alexis Saelemaekers at the club despite proposals arriving to sign him.

The 25-year-old joined the Rossoneri in 2020 and has since gone on to make 141 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists, while also establishing himself as a useful option in other roles given his versatility.

However, he has fallen out of favour over the past two seasons and in turn has had loan stints with Bologna and Roma, but with his loan spell with the latter coming to an end officially at the end of this month, he looks set for a return to Milan this summer with a decision needed on his future.

With seven goals and seven assists in 31 outings for Roma, it’s fair to say that he’s had a positive season and is in a good position from a personal perspective as he’ll be in demand, but the indication is that he could stick with us over the summer at least.

As per Antonio Vitiello, Roma are keen to re-sign him and proposals have arrived from elsewhere too, but it’s noted that Allegri wants to assess him in pre-season and potentially reintegrate him back into the Milan squad rather than sell him now.

Time will ultimately tell if that’s a wise decision given we could fetch a decent transfer fee for Saelemaekers right now, but the Belgian international will surely still be a wanted man later in the summer and so it’s important for Allegri to take a closer look at what is already at his disposal first and see who fits into his plans.

With so many changes being made this summer, it arguably wouldn’t hurt to have some stability and consistency in the squad, and bringing back Saelemaekers could prove to be a smart move to add competition and depth to the group.

Despite his positive experience at Roma last season, it could still be argued that he’s not at the level required to really make the difference for Milan long-term, but with Allegri implementing his own identity and style of play, it could be an important match with what Saelemaekers can offer us, and so a second chance at San Siro is seemingly still very much a possibility for the Belgian ace.
