Stalwart’s exit confirmed as Milan continue to clear space in rebuild

AC Milan have confirmed the departure of Alessandro Florenzi with his contract expiring on June 30.

The 34-year-old initially joined the Rossoneri on loan from Roma in 2021 before his switch was made permanent the following summer.

In his four years with the club, Florenzi went on to make 77 appearances for Milan, scoring three goals and providing seven assists to go with his defensive contributions.

Injuries certainly blighted his time with us, but the Italian international’s experience, leadership and versatility all made him a key member of the squad as he played his part in helping us win the Scudetto in the 2021/22 campaign.

However, with his contract expiring this summer, Milan have confirmed that Florenzi will depart and seek a new chapter in his career, and we wish him the best of luck going forward wherever he ends up.

It’s another sensible move from the club though as we continue to clear space and create additional financial resources as part of the rebuild under sporting director Igli Tare and boss Massimiliano Allegri this summer, with a number of reinforcements expected to arrive ahead of next season.

As well as the sale of Tijjani Reijnders, the club have confirmed in recent days the decision to send all of our loanees from last season back to their parent clubs with the expectation that none will be signed permanently, and that will open the door for Allegri to bring in players better suited to his ideas, system and style of play, which in turn will hopefully result in a more competitive Milan side next season and beyond.

In turn, while Florenzi arguably could have been an important presence and voice in the dressing room to help Allegri in his first season back in charge, Milan have to look at the bigger picture and the long-term future of building a successful new cycle at the club, and the time came for the two sides to go their separate ways.

It continues to set up a fascinating rest of the summer, as speculation remains rife over possible incomings and outgoings to transform this Milan squad.
