Milan chief prepares to step up pursuit of preferred candidate for key role

AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani is reportedly preparing to step up our pursuit of Tony D’Amico to become our sporting director ahead of next season.

Despite the possibility of lifting a second trophy this year, the Rossoneri have had an underwhelming and disappointing campaign particularly in Serie A and the Champions League, and it has led to frustration for many with every level of the club.

Whether it’s an absent owner or a management team in over their heads or an underperforming squad, it hasn’t been good enough from Milan this season given the club’s high expectations and demands.

One of the key issues has been the construction of this current squad as we’ve lacked quality and consistent across the board, and with no sporting director in place to oversee that process, it’s felt by many that an appointment must be made to move forward in the right direction.

According to MilanNews, while several names have been linked with the post, Furlani’s preference remains D’Amico despite Atalanta President Antonio Percassi making it clear this week that he expects his sporting director to remain in his position beyond this summer.

Time will tell if there can be a breakthrough in discussions between the two clubs, but ultimately much will likely depend on D’Amico’s preference, as if he’s happy in Bergamo, it could force Milan to look elsewhere and consider alternative candidates.

The fact that Furlani is still said to be pursuing him though would suggest that he has some level of belief in our chances of prising him away from our Serie A rivals, and so time will tell how talks progress in the coming days.

Naturally, the sooner the appointment can be made the better for Milan as it will give our new sporting director time to settle in, prepare a strategy for the summer transfer window and improve the squad, potentially alongside a new coach amid doubts over Sergio Conceicao’s long-term future at the club.

In the more immediate future though, full focus will be on our remaining league games and the Coppa Italia Final, while Furlani seemingly still has a lot of work to do to get his preferred choice in the door.
