Setback for Milan amid touted pursuit of candidate for key role

AC Milan have suffered a potential setback in our pursuit of Atalanta’s Tony D’Amico as our possible new sporting director.

The Rossoneri are expected to make an appointment in that position this summer after what has largely been an underwhelming campaign.

A key factor in that disappointment and frustration has been the construction of the current squad as we’ve simply not been good enough to compete with the top sides, and so a sporting director will hopefully improve the way in which the group is assembled, and subsequently lead to improved and more consistent results on the pitch.

However, as reported by Antonio Vitiello, Atalanta President Antonio Percassi has seemingly ruled one of our targets in D’Amico out of the running with his latest comments, as he insisted this week that he expects him back in Bergamo beyond this summer to continue his work with the club.

“Beyond the interest of other clubs, he will have the enormous task of creating a competitive Atalanta next year,” Percassi said. “We are happy with him, he is happy with us, and he will have a great responsibility.”

Milan have been linked with many names in recent months, perhaps most notably Igli Tare, and so if D’Amico is no longer an option, it remains to be seen who we step up our focus on.

Naturally, there will be a concern that we may end up not appointing a sporting director at all if the potential options continue to diminish, and that in turn would be the worst-case scenario as it would merely mean the continuation of the current set-up and structure which has fallen short of expectations this year.

It could be a pivotal summer as we make changes at various levels, with question marks remaining over who will be our sporting director, whether or not Sergio Conceicao will still be in charge ahead of next season and what the squad might look like if we are to compete for major honours again.
