Injury blow sparks Milan into action as potential loan move touted

AC Milan are reportedly in talks with Cagliari over a possible loan deal to sign goalkeeper Simone Scuffet for the upcoming campaign.

The Rossoneri were dealt an injury blow this past week as back-up goalkeeper Marco Sportiello suffered a hand injury ahead of our pre-season encounter with Manchester City.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the experienced shot-stopper could be sidelined for a few months, and so that has sparked Milan into looking for alternative options with the new Serie A season fast approaching.

It’s reported that Scuffet has emerged as a target on loan, but the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement on a fee for the temporary deal, and so time will tell if there is a breakthrough in negotiations or if Milan are forced to look elsewhere.

Mike Maignan will of course remain as first choice between the posts, but without Sportiello, we certainly lack an experienced back-up option behind the French international, with youngsters Lapo Nava and Lorenzo Torriani seemingly the next in line to provide competition and depth.

Although the latter has impressed during pre-season so far, at 19 years of age, it would be some challenge for him to come in and play under immense pressure when needed, particularly when considering Maignan’s recent injury history, and so it’s a smart move from the Rossoneri to consider other options.

Scuffet, 28, has had spells at Udinese, Spezia, CFR Cluj, and Como, but after joining Cagliari last summer, he went on to make 31 appearances last season and settled back into once again playing in Italy.

In turn, should Milan opt to make a move for him, albeit even a loan swoop, he’ll hopefully offer a safe pair of hands behind Maignan, and give us a reliable and consistent presence in goal when needed by Paulo Fonseca.
