AC Milan player ratings vs Inter: Quartet decisive in stunning comeback win

AC Milan fought back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to secure a 3-2 win over Inter to win the Italian Super Cup.

Having conceded either side of half-time, it looked bleak for the Rossoneri as we had a long way back to keep our hopes of winning silverware alive.

However, goals from Theo Hernandez, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham ultimately turned things around, as Sergio Conceicao sealed a trophy in just his second game in charge.

It was a sensational turnaround with plenty of positives and some negatives, and while the hard work will continue when we return to Italy to resume domestic matters, this is a night to remember for all concerned after a superb victory.

AC Milan player ratings vs Inter:

Mike Maignan, 7.5 – Left exposed by his defence for the two goals and so little he could have done in those situations, but produced a string of pivotal saves to put us in a position to win.

Emerson Royal, 5 – Adds a dynamic to our attacking play, but the defensive side of his game is still a weakness. Poor defending for the opening goal and looked vulnerable at other times too.

Malick Thiaw, 6 – Made a crucial late block but similarly to the entire backline, we weren’t good enough for either goal we conceded and must tighten things up as it was too easy for Inter inside our box.

Fikayo Tomori, 5.5 – Echoing the above point, our defending wasn’t good enough, as evidenced by the long ball played right through the heart of our backline for the second goal. Will need to step up if he is to keep his place in the side.

Theo Hernandez, 7.5 – Crucial impact on the game as his free-kick sparked our comeback, and it was an excellent finish from just outside the box. Still needs to improve defensively though as he was part of the issue for the opening goal, but in terms of his drive and the attacking dynamic he gives us, this was much more promising.

Yunus Musah, 6.5 – A strong shift in both phases of the game, as his energy and intensity was key in the midfield battle, and he offered something in attacking areas at times too.

Youssouf Fofana, 6.5 – Similar to Musah in that he had a job to do and did it effectively with his ability to break play up and regain possession to give us presence and control in midfield. His influence had a knock-on effect too as it allowed others more freedom to express themselves.

Alex Jimenez, 5.5 – Works hard for the team out of possession and does his job from that perspective well, but doesn’t bring enough quality to the table from an attacking sense and so our changes were decisive.

Tijjani Reijnders, 6 – A steady effort as he had moments where he threatened and showcased his quality, but he wasn’t as impactful as he can be and he did struggle at times with his defensive work.

Christian Pulisic, 8 – Much more effective playing on the right side, and he produced real quality for the equaliser, both with his touch inside the box to set himself and create the opening as well as the finish itself. Delivered when we needed him again.

Alvaro Morata, 6 – Didn’t offer enough of a threat up top, but he leads the line well at times and is an important focal point for how we want to play. Will hope to have a more direct impact moving forward.

Substitutes:

Rafael Leao, 8 – A game-changing impact off the bench. Aside from winning the free-kick for our first goal and setting up our winner, he was critical in changing the flow of the game and causing Inter real problems in their defensive third. Huge influence in our comeback.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, 6 – Important contribution as he helped add physicality and drive in midfield in the latter stages.

Tammy Abraham, 7 – Decisive. Produced the moment of the game as he tapped home our winning goal to secure the trophy. Important to see him continue to make an impact off the bench to show why he can be an important part of Conceicao’s plans.
