Injury concern allayed as update emerges on Milan ace after setback

AC Milan forward Santiago Gimenez suffered an injury blow in Mexico’s defeat to England on Sunday night, but initial fears over the severity of the issue have been allayed.

The 25-year-old joined Milan from Feyenoord in January 2025, and he has since gone on to make 37 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in those outings.

Like many players in the current squad though, there is uncertainty over his future at the club as the Rossoneri look to rebuild and strengthen the squad to suit new boss Ruben Amorim’s ideas and style of play, and so it’s unclear at this stage as to whether or not Gimenez will be part of those plans.

A major issue for the Mexican international since he joined us has been injuries, as he was limited to just 18 appearances last season and so in order to make his case to Amorim to secure his future with Milan, he would have been desperate to stay healthy and show his quality at the World Cup initially, and then in pre-season over the course of this summer.

However, those hopes took a blow this past weekend as Gimenez suffered an injury while representing Mexico and initial fears were that he might have sustained a fracture to his ankle.

Fortunately, as per Antonio Vitiello, further tests and scans have ruled out fractures, and it has been confirmed as an ankle sprain which in turn will be a huge relief for all concerned, albeit it will still result in a significant recovery period.

Whether he gets a chance to impress Amorim in pre-season or gets the green light to find a new challenge elsewhere, the last thing that Gimenez and Milan needed was for him to be sidelined for a lengthy spell by injury.

Having avoided that, time will tell what the next step is for him, as the expectation is that there will be plenty more transfer business done by the club this summer, and outgoings will be needed to continue to balance our books and fund our own pursuits of reinforcements.
