Milan ace remains doubtful vs Genoa after injury setback, return date target

AC Milan forward Luka Jovic trained away from the group on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury blow in the warm-up prior to our win over Venezia this past weekend, which was a disappointing setback for all concerned given his heroics against Inter in the Coppa Italia just days prior.

While the Rossoneri will continue to battle through to the end of the season to try and climb the Serie A standings and put ourselves in a position to qualify for Europe next year, the Coppa Italia Final against Bologna next month is undoubtedly now the priority.

Sergio Conceicao will be desperate to have as close to a fully-fit squad available as possible to give himself alternative options and tactical solutions for the clash, and so it remains to be seen if Jovic will be back in time to potentially make a decisive impact once again.

According to Sky Sport, the Serbian international underwent a personalised session on Wednesday away from the rest of the group, and although the hope is that he’ll be able to feature against Genoa on Monday night, Milan won’t risk aggravating the problem by rushing him back.

In turn, it’s hoped that he continues to make progress in his recovery between now and the Final, while that means Santiago Gimenez and Tammy Abraham will be tasked with leading the line for us and trying to find some consistent goalscoring form.

Jovic has had a limited impact over the course of the campaign with just four goals in 12 appearances, and so the expectation isn’t that he’ll be a solution to all of our problems in the final third if he’s fully fit in the coming weeks.

Nevertheless, his double against Inter to help book our spot in the Final was a significant and decisive moment for him in his time with us, and with a big summer ahead for Milan, he’ll be itching to build on that.
