AC Milan injury news: Ibrahimovic out, Tonali doubtful vs Liverpool

AC Milan face Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday night, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be absent through injury.

The Rossoneri begin the Champions League group stage with a difficult trip to face Jurgen Klopp’s men, and Stefano Pioli would undoubtedly have been hoping to have a fully fit squad at his disposal.

Unfortunately for us, that won’t be the case, as MilanNews note that in his press conference on Tuesday, the Milan boss ruled out Ibrahimovic for this encounter due to a fresh injury concern.

“Zlatan would have been a starter, but a tendon inflammation can happen. We hoped the discomfort would pass, but it didn’t, so it’s useless to take risks.”

Pioli went on to add that Ante Rebic or Olivier Giroud would start up front in Ibrahimovic’s place, albeit the latter returned from a spell on the sidelines of his own at the weekend and so it remains to be seen whether or not he starts or Pioli sticks with Rebic after his influential role in our win over Lazio.

Sandro Tonali was also seen standing on the sideline during our training session on Tuesday morning, sparking concern that he would also be a doubt to travel to Liverpool.

However, as per the club’s official Twitter account below, the 21-year-old has been included in the squad and so it’s hoped that he’s passed fit to start given his impressive start to the Serie A season.

Time will tell what starting line-up Pioli goes with, but it’s unlikely to look too different to the side that faced Lazio on Sunday, perhaps with a few tweaks with the likes of Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemaekers rested for that one.

Nevertheless, it’s going to be a real test for us on our return to Europe’s premier competition, and so whoever plays will know that they have to be at their best to ensure we come away with something to show for our efforts.
