Milan eye another midfield stalwart to strengthen key area for Allegri

AC Milan are reportedly considering Granit Xhaka as a possible option to further strengthen our midfield this summer.

The Rossoneri are expected to see Tijjani Reijnders leave this month as he closes in on a move to Manchester City, while we’ve been heavily linked with swooping for Luka Modric on a free transfer as part of our midfield rebuild under Massimiliano Allegri.

It’s a key area of the squad that we need to improve ahead of next season with options that suit the system, identity and style of play that the new Milan boss will try to implement, and it appears as though we could be prioritising experience and know-how to get us back to performing at a competitive level on a consistent basis.

According to Matteo Moretto, Milan are interested in the possible signing of Xhaka, as it’s reported that the Swiss international is a name on our transfer shortlist.

That said, he adds that no discussions over a transfer have taken place as of yet, and so whether or not he’s open to a move elsewhere this summer after his stint at Bayer Leverkusen, Milan will have to step up our pursuit and open talks before this becomes a genuine possibility.

The 32-year-old has been revitalised after his move to the Bundesliga side from Arsenal in 2023, as he played a critical role in their success under Xabi Alonso in the season before last.

In turn, with Milan looking to bounce back from a woeful campaign, going for stalwarts and veterans to add experience, leadership and the ability to dictate in midfield could be a smart move as we try to lay down the foundations for future success under this new regime, but ideally we’d find a balance between that and longer-term solutions.

Time will tell if the Swiss midfielder becomes a serious target, but it certainly appears as though we’re in the market for more than just Modric in an attempt to strengthen and evolve our midfield and it’s hoped that it proves to be a successful strategy if it materialises and the pieces fall into place.
