Milan transfer target given hefty price-tag as possible doubts raised

AC Milan will reportedly have to splash out a significant fee if we are to prise Emerson Royal away from Tottenham this summer.

The 25-year-old has seemingly emerged as our priority target to strengthen our options at right-back, despite the fact that he hasn’t always convinced at Spurs where he made just 24 appearances last season.

While the Brazilian international does have a lot of experience across his spells in England and with Real Betis, it’s somewhat of a questionable move, particularly when the potential fee is taken into consideration.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are demanding in excess of €20m to approve of an exit for Emerson, and so it remains to be seen if Milan are willing to satisfy their valuation.

It could be argued that that doesn’t really feel like value for money and Milan are perhaps better off considering alternative solutions if Spurs are unwilling to drop their demands.

Nevertheless, if Paulo Fonseca has identified Emerson as the perfect right-back for his style of play and system moving forward, time will tell if he gets the backing of the Milan management in the transfer market and lands his man, or if he is forced to consider alternatives.

What is perhaps clear though is that Milan must upgrade in that position moving forward, with the likes of Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi capable of offering solid competition and depth, but we’ve not seen enough quality from them on a consistent basis to warrant sticking with them in the starting XI.

Particularly now with Fonseca in charge and looking for energy and impetus down both flanks, the ageing pair may not have the legs to do the job required week in and week out.

It promises to be a busy summer for the Rossoneri given our need to strengthen in various areas of the squad, and so if it’s unlikely that an agreement will be reached on Emerson’s valuation and thus talks are looking like breaking down, we must move swiftly in considering our options.
