Deal agreed as Milan tipped to confirm key signing for Allegri

AC Milan reportedly have a deal in place to sign midfield stalwart Luka Modric on a free transfer this summer, with the move now expected to materialise in the coming days.

The 39-year-old will leave Real Madrid after a trophy-laden spell at the club with his contract expiring this month, and now with their elimination from the Club World Cup confirmed, he’s a free agent and set for the next chapter of his glittering career.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Modric will put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Rossoneri, and that deal is now in place with an announcement seemingly imminent.

While there might be some doubts given his age and the stage of his career he’s now in with his best years behind him, there’s no denying the quality, experience, leadership and know-how that the Croatian stalwart can still bring to a team, as he’s continued to play a key role for club and country despite his advancing years.

Further, it could prove to be a crucial fit for Massimiliano Allegri in his first season back in charge, as he’ll need leaders on the pitch and in training to set the standard for others to follow, and there’s certainly going to be plenty for the younger players in the squad to learn from Modric.

In turn, albeit it’s a short-term fix for our midfield as it could only prove to be a one-year deal, it’s a sensible one given the place we’re at after such a bitterly disappointing campaign last year, and it’s hoped that Modric is able to continue to stay fit and play an important role for us in the upcoming season in leading by example and helping us through difficult moments when others perhaps need to lean on the senior figures.

After Tijjani Reijnders’ departure last month, that will now be two new signings for our midfield after Samuele Ricci arrived from Torino, and the Italian international in particular will no doubt watch his incoming teammate closely to learn as much as possible as he’ll consider himself the long-term solution in midfield while playing alongside Modric this year.
