Talks underway as Milan look to land experienced stalwart for key role

AC Milan are reportedly in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the possible signing of midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer.

Having already lost Tijjani Reijnders following his transfer to Manchester City, Yunus Musah continues to be linked with an exit from the Rossoneri which in turn would leave glaring holes in our midfield ahead of next season.

Should the second departure materialise, Massimiliano Allegri will undoubtedly prioritise bringing in replacements, and it appears as though the Italian tactician has identified one of his preferred options who could help him implement his ideas efficiently and successfully.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Milan are in negotiations with Leverkusen already over a potential deal to sign Xhaka, and so it remains to be seen if the two clubs can reach an agreement to open the door for a departure from the Bundesliga outfit.

The 32-year-old has been an influential figure for Leverkusen over the past two seasons, with his leadership, experience and technical ability making him a key player under Xabi Alonso during their successful period under the Spaniard.

Combined with his experience from spells at Arsenal and Borussia Monchengladbach, Xhaka could be an ideal profile of midfielder that we need to add this summer, as Allegri will want to play a certain way and will prefer established options who can come in and do a job immediately.

The Swiss international will certainly be capable of that, and his strong personality will be needed as we rebuild and look to open up a new cycle by laying the foundations for consistent success starting from next season, and it’s hoped that his past spells at the top level will help him deal with that pressure and be a leading figure for us.

Time will tell if an agreement can be reached on a transfer fee as well as personal terms to green light the switch, but it certainly looks as though Milan are attempting to work at pace to get the required players in and hopefully give them plenty of time to settle and adapt when the squad returns to Milanello early next month to begin pre-season preparations.
