Milan tipped to make formal proposal soon in pursuit of midfield reinforcement

AC Milan are reportedly set to hold further talks with Bayer Leverkusen next week and will make a formal proposal for midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The 32-year-old has been a key figure for the Bundesliga side since joining them from Arsenal in 2023 as he played a pivotal role in their success under Xabi Alonso.

With Leverkusen going through a rebuild of their own to an extent after the Spanish tactician’s departure this summer, it appears as though Milan have set their sights on Xhaka to bolster our midfield options under Massimiliano Allegri for next season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Rossoneri are expected to make a formal proposal for the Swiss international when talks continue next week with the aim of trying to reach an agreement to sign the midfield ace.

It’s critical that Allegri is backed in moulding this squad into his own this summer to help him implement his preferred system and style of play, and if that means adding more experience and established players who can give us leadership and quality on the pitch in both phases of the game, then they will likely emerge as fundamental additions, particularly given the number of changes expected in this transfer window.

Milan have also been linked with a move for Luka Modric, and so having lost Tijjani Reijnders and with speculation continuing to heavily hint that we could see more exits in the coming weeks, we’re hopefully building a sound core to the squad with influential midfielders who are capable of imposing themselves on games and controlling tempo and possession.

That said, given it sounds as though talks are not yet at an advanced stage between the two clubs, as per Romano’s update above, time will tell if an agreement can be reached on a transfer fee and personal terms, but it certainly looks as though Milan have our priority midfield targets this summer and hopefully Allegri lands his ideal solutions to rebuild this team and make us significantly more competitive from next season onwards.

Naturally, it wouldn’t hurt to add some longer-term solutions too, but with other areas of the Milan squad to address, time will tell if that happens this summer, or if that is part of the strategy further down the line once we’ve rebuilt a solid foundation on which we can create further success.
