Decisive second offer incoming for Milan ace with future up in air

AC Milan are reportedly expecting to receive a second offer from Chelsea for Mike Maignan on Monday, and it could be a decisive moment in the transfer talks.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper has just 12 months remaining on his current contract, and with renewal talks stalling, he has been heavily linked with a departure this summer.

It would certainly be a blow to lose the French international, as despite his injury issues and the occasional error, he has proven to be a decisive presence in between the posts on a regular basis since joining us in 2021, and his quality and experience will be missed if he moves on.

According to Calciomercato, Chelsea have had an opening offer rejected already having fallen well short of the €30m touted valuation that the Rossoneri have of Maignan, and they are expected to launch a second proposal on Monday which could determine if they remain locked in negotiations or consider alternative options.

It’s added that Maignan is open to the move, but should talks fail to result in an agreement between the two clubs, there is a possibility that he sees out his current contract and remains at Milan for another year before potentially moving on as a free agent.

There’s a lot to be sorted out in the coming days, but Milan certainly need clarity sooner rather than later as Massimiliano Allegri will want to know if he can rely on Maignan in the upcoming campaign, or if the club need to act in the transfer market this summer to find his replacement.

Coupled with the ongoing speculation regarding a number of outgoings and incomings at the club in the coming months, this is shaping up to be quite a hectic period for Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare and all those involved in our recruitment process, but it’s just hoped that we can end the transfer window with a stronger squad compared to the one we started it with.

While a rebuild was to be expected to an extent in order to allow Allegri to build his own squad, time will tell if we end up losing too much stability in the group and that comes back to hurt us, or if these changes prove to be necessary and very much the correct strategy to get us back competing at the top level again from next season onwards.
