Milan face threat of losing key man as interest touted amid stalling contract talks

AC Milan reportedly face the threat of losing Mike Maignan this summer as Chelsea are said to have expressed interest in signing him.

Albeit injuries and dips in form have blighted his stint with the Rossoneri since joining us in 2021, the 29-year-old shot-stopper has proven to be decisive on countless occasions and is regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in Europe.

Doubts persist over his future at Milan though given he has just 12 months remaining on his current contract, and although it has been suggested that Massimiliano Allegri sees him as a crucial presence in his plans moving forward having taken charge at the club this summer for a second stint, it appears as though speculation is building over a possible exit.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have made an approach to Milan for Maignan, as they’re aware of his contract renewal situation and so it’s now with the Rossoneri to decide whether or not to open talks with them over a potential deal.

If it becomes apparent that Maignan wishes to move on, and that could now become increasingly complicated if there’s an opportunity to play in the Premier League and Champions League next season with Chelsea, Milan’s hand may well be forced into approving a sale of another key individual this summer.

In contrast, if the French international is eager to agree on new terms and extend his stay with us, an agreement has to be found, as with reports already linking Tijjani Reijnders, Theo Hernandez and other established figures with departures in the coming weeks, we can’t afford to lose so many top players in one go and have to rebuild at this magnitude in one transfer window.

Time will tell how the situation plays out, but Allegri, in conjunction with sporting director Igli Tare, will be deep in planning on how he wants to rebuild this squad into his own. While outgoings are expected to help balance our books and provide funds to spend on reinforcements, there is a delicate and critical balance where we could end up facing a major rebuild this summer that makes the task of getting us back to where we want to be more difficult in the more immediate future.

It’s important to note that no agreement has been touted, but this must now act as a warning sign for Milan if the intention from the club’s side is to get a contract renewal agreed with Maignan to secure his long-term future at San Siro.
