Milan chief eager to sign top-class stalwart to bolster squad

AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare is reportedly keen on bringing Luka Modric to the club this summer.

The 39-year-old will end a trophy-laden spell at Real Madrid next month when his contract expires, having made nearly 600 appearances for the Spanish giants and won every piece of silverware on offer.

Modric has certainly established himself as one of the greats of the game with what he’s achieved at club level and having been a stalwart for Croatia too with 186 caps to his name, and with the leadership, experience and quality that he can still offer, Milan have been paired with a potential move.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tare is said to be keen on signing Modric and so it remains to be seen if a deal can be agreed to land him on a free transfer, as it’s added that he is set to receive offers from all around the world in the coming weeks.

As noted above, the potential signing of Modric would bring a lot of important strengths and personal characteristics to the squad, and perhaps many of them have been missing in the current group given what we saw last season in what was a largely disappointing and frustrating campaign.

That said, Modric will turn 40 later this year, and although he continues to operate at a high level and displayed his class for Real Madrid through to the end of the season and will feature in the Club World Cup, we’ve surely seen the best from him come and go already, and adding an ageing player to potentially play a limited role could be perceived as a questionable move.

Time will tell if Tare’s ‘dream’ develops into something more serious, but the Croatian veteran would certainly add a lot of positive features to our midfield if he were to arrive. If he can still play a critical role in what Massimiliano Allegri intends on building on his return to the club in terms of identity and style of play, then he should be backed in the transfer market.
