Talks ongoing over key Milan appointment as search continues

AC Milan have reportedly resumed talks with Atalanta over the possible appointment of Tony D’Amico as our new sporting director.

The Rossoneri have endured a difficult season this year, as despite the potential for another trophy in the form of the Coppa Italia still being a possibility, we’ve fallen way short of expectations in Serie A and the Champions League.

With just six league games remaining, we have an eight-point gap to bridge to be in contention for qualifying for the Champions League next year, and so the pressure is certainly on Sergio Conceicao and the players.

However, the club’s management haven’t escaped criticism over the past 12 months either, and speculation has been building over a potential change to our infrastructure with the appointment of a new sporting director.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Milan have resumed talks with Atalanta over possibly prising D’Amico away from Bergamo, and it’s suggested that he could move into pole position for the role as Milan close in on making a decision on their preferred candidate.

It’s added that a meeting was held with Igli Tare earlier this week and so he remains in contention, but D’Amico, who is under contract with our Serie A rivals until 2027, could emerge as the top choice if talks continue to progress positively.

What is clear is that our recruitment and ability to build a winning squad hasn’t been good enough in recent times, and we’ve seen a gradual regression on the pitch in our ability to compete for major honours.

In turn, the appointment of a sporting director will hopefully address that issue, and if we can bring in top talent and manage the sporting side of the club more efficiently, it will give us a better chance of being successful.

Time will tell what that would mean for the current management structure, but particularly if Milan fall short in qualifying for the Champions League and suffer defeat in the Coppa Italia between now and the end of the campaign, the expectation is that changes will be seen as necessary from the top down to the coaching position.

Should we move forward with the appointment of a sporting director though, it’s hoped that those making that critical decision will ultimately land on the right man for the job, otherwise that has the potential of dragging our concerns and issues on beyond this season.
