Exit talk over Milan defensive ace dismissed for now after key change

Amid recent speculation, an exit for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has reportedly been blocked for now following the club’s coaching change.

Paulo Fonseca was dismissed this week after an inconsistent and underwhelming start to the campaign, as he lasted just 200 days in the job after being appointed last summer.

The Rossoneri wasted little time in bringing in his replacement, as Sergio Conceicao was named as his successor less than 24 hours later, and the Portuguese tactician has begun work with the group ahead of his first game in charge on Friday in the Italian Super Cup against Juventus.

Naturally, with a change of coach, the new man in the job will want to assess the options at his disposal and decide who forms part of his plans moving forward and suits his ideas most effectively, and according to Sky Sport, that means that any exit for Tomori has now been dismissed for the time being as Conceicao carries out that assessment.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Juventus in recent weeks, as that followed on from losing his place in the Milan starting line-up under Fonseca, which in turn perhaps forced him to have to consider his options for a more prominent role elsewhere.

Tomori has been limited to 15 appearances across all competitions so far this season, having previously been a fixture of the side since joining us from Chelsea in January 2021, and so it will have been difficult for him to accept falling down the pecking order with Matteo Gabbia, Strahinja Pavlovic and Malick Thiaw all vying for a starting berth too.

Time will tell if his situation changes under Conceicao as the England international will have to impress the new Milan boss and earn his place back, but for now, it seems sensible for everyone to hit the reset button, take stock of what we already have available, and then assess this month what is needed to improve the squad to ensure that we improve on what we’ve produced on the pitch thus far.
