Injury blow for Milan stalwart, expected to undergo surgery next week

AC Milan stalwart Alessandro Florenzi has reportedly suffered a knee injury, and will undergo surgery in Italy in the coming days.

The 33-year-old sustained the issue during our pre-season game against Manchester City in New York this weekend following a challenge on Erling Haaland, and he was subsequently forced off the pitch.

Given his immediate reaction after the incident, it was feared that it was going to be a serious setback for the veteran, as having suffered various injuries over the years, he will know better than anyone if it’s a significant issue.

As per Antonio Vitiello, it appears as though those fears were warranted, as after undergoing further tests, it has seemingly been confirmed that Florenzi suffered ligament and meniscal damage in his knee, and so he will return to Italy in the coming days and undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation work.

It remains to be seen how long it will sideline him for, but given the severity of the setback, it doesn’t appear as though the versatile stalwart will be available to Paulo Fonseca any time soon.

After initially joining us on loan in 2021, Florenzi has gone on to make 76 appearances for the club. Given his age and injury history, he hasn’t necessarily been a regular starter, but he has proven to be an important member of the squad given his ability to play in various positions when needed.

In turn, we will certainly miss that depth he can provide as well as his leadership and experience, and so it’s hoped that he now makes a speedy and full recovery without any setbacks to return as soon as possible.

While Milan have been touted to already be in the market to bolster our options in the full-back positions, particularly at right-back, Florenzi’s injury will likely speed that process up now to ensure that we have enough quality competition and depth in those positions for the upcoming campaign.
