Official: Milan confirm signing of Mike Maignan, contract details and fee touted

AC Milan have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Mike Maignan from Lille, and he has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Rossoneri.

The 25-year-old featured in every Ligue 1 game this past season as Lille lifted the league title, while their shot-stopper conceded 23 goals in 38 games and kept 21 clean sheets.

As he also now makes his breakthrough for France, he is set to play a pivotal role for club and country as he enters some of his prime years and he’ll now begin a new journey at Milan.

The club confirmed on their website that the French international has signed a five-year contract until June 2026, while MilanNews report that the transfer fee is an initial €13m with an additional €2m in bonuses.

Further, MilanNews have reported that Maignan is expected to earn €2.5m-a-year over five years, while that could increase to €3m depending on bonuses.

With his arrival now official, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure will soon follow, as his current contract is set to expire next month and so the expectation now is that he will leave the club on a free transfer.

It comes after an inability to agree on new terms, with Milan moving on to bring in Maignan having seemingly refused to raise their offer to satisfy the demands of Donnarumma.

In turn, while it’s a major disappointment to lose him for nothing as well as losing his quality between the posts having racked up 251 appearances for the club, Paolo Maldini and the club hierarchy should be commended for their approach and attitude to the situation as it is arguably the smart decision both from a financial perspective and that of no player being bigger than the club.

Maignan will wear the No.16 jersey for Milan, as confirmed in the club’s statement above.
