Tomori shows his class for Milan in difficult test vs Liverpool

On a difficult night for AC Milan, Fikayo Tomori stood out as one of our top performers in the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool.

The Rossoneri were facing a tough assignment on our return to the Champions League after seven years, both in terms of the quality of the opposition and the atmosphere at Anfield.

It was a great learning experience for the squad to understand the level and tempo at the highest level though, and after a battling performance where we came under immense pressure but almost came away with a result, it’s something to build on moving forward.

Mike Maignan, Simon Kjaer and Ante Rebic deserve credit too as they all played a positive part in the encounter on Merseyside, but it was Tomori who arguably made his presence felt the most.

Tomori shows why he’s so crucial to Milan

Perhaps benefiting from his previous experience at Chelsea where he was used to the fast tempo and pace of the Premier League and having faced Liverpool before, the 23-year-old appeared to deal with the occasion much better than some of his teammates.

As detailed in the video below, Tomori looked assured in possession for the most part as he grew frustrated with the lack of movement in front of him to give him options, while he used his aggression and speed well to keep things tight at the back when called into action.

Naturally, there were moments where he could have been better, namely for Mohamed Salah’s goal which made it 2-2, while he was unfortunate to deflect the opener into the back of the net.

Nevertheless, the positive situations certainly outweighed the negative, as Tomori showed his importance to Milan and why he’s going to be pivotal in our bid to compete at this level moving forward.

With his athleticism, pace, aggressive style and ability to cope with the movement of top-class forwards, Tomori was a major plus point in an otherwise difficult night for Milan who struggled to really get a hold of the game barring the 10-minute period before half-time where we scored twice..

It’s something that we’ll assess, acknowledge and improve on in the remaining group stage games, and it’s hoped that we can still get the results required to advance to the knockout stage.

That said, Tomori is going to be crucial throughout that run of fixtures, and he undoubtedly started well on Wednesday night at Anfield having emerged as one of our best players on the pitch in an impressive display.
